After the discovery. Only Spanish ships sailed the waters of the Strait of Magellan for many years, until the English and later the Dutch privateers arrived on their way to the Pacific coast. They were sailors with privateering licenses, authorized to plunder Spanish ships and cities, especially in Chile and Peru.
Francis Drake was the first Englishman to reach the Strait , with five ships in 1577. He wanted to sail around Cape Horn, but was prevented from doing so by storms. On this occasion he discovered a large sea, which today bears his name, the Drake Sea. Drake was an elegant privateer. He wore a rich scarlet silk sea cloak and a sword, a gift from Queen Elizabeth of England, to whom he gave his loot.
In his voyages to the south, he lost one of his ships and a boat with many men. But he crossed the Strait, went out to sea, and attacked ships and all the cities along the coasts of South America. Off Peru he was harassed by the Spanish navigator Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa, sent in pursuit by the Viceroy, engaging him in combat on two occasions. Francis Drake sailed the seas of the northern hemisphere and then took the route of the Indies, reaching Europe by the route of Juan Sebastián Elcano. Drake was thus the second sailor to sail around the world.
Then came the pirates Thomas Cavendish, Andrew Merrik, Richard Hawkins and others, who were fought by the Spanish.
